eCALL - New system in cars fro 31 March 2018

Posted: May 26, 2017

eCall – new system in cars from 31 March 2018.

All cars sold in the EU from 31 March 2018 must have a new safety feature system called eCall. In the event of a collision in which a car's airbags are deployed, eCall automatically contacts the emergency services using GPS to relay the time, your location, what type of car you are, what side of the motorway/carriageway. There is also a microphone in the car allowing you to talk directly to the call handlers when the system is activated, and you can use this for assistance even if airbags haven't been deployed but someone in the vehicle is injured or ill.

Whilst this has the potential to save lives, it will cost just under £100 to manufacturing costs, so this will increase consumer prices by a bit.

eCall it is thought by the emergency services will cut response times by as much as 40%, reducing road deaths by up to 10% .
